Bike to School Week 2013 is a wrap...

And it was a big success! Over 60 schools in Metro Vancouver registered to participate - 3 times as many as in years past! - logging over 4000 trips. A number of schools turned out big numbers and held great events. This year's winners are:

Elementary: Henry Hudson Elementary
Secondary: Ecole Jules Quesnel
1st Year: Lynn Valley Elementary
Best Story: Ecole Doncaster

In 2014, HUB and HASTe are planning to take Bike to School Week province-wide. Whether your school participated or not, we would appreciate your input and feedback to help us shape next year's campaign.

...and iWalk 2013 registration is open!

For 2013, International Walk to School Day is October 9th, and iWalk Week runs October 7th-11th. Every year, hundreds of BC schools join thousands of schools around the world to promote and celebrate communities that are safe places to walk. Register your school to receive a resource package containing posters, stickers, and everything else you need to join the international walking celebration in 2013.

For many families, making the journey to school on foot can be a challenge. HASTe has a plan to bring its marquee program - School Travel Planning - to communities across BC. Keep watching this space for more information.

Active Healthy Kids Canada

The annual report card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth was released last month. Canada got a D on active transportation activity for kids, but the report emphasizes that this is a key area in which quick gains and long term impacts can be made.

Bike Ed in Vancouver

Check the HUB website for more information or contact Steph Gray about becoming a cycling instructor.

Tasty Little Bites

Now, we don't generally advocate for more screen time. But if you are stuck in front of your computer and need a fun Active Travel fix, check out Midtrafik's Epic Bus Commercial,  Grist's Tips for the Bike Curious, or Streetfact's brief history of children's declining Freedom to Roam.
That's it for another edition. If you'd like more information and resources for bringing sustainable transportation ideas, education or action into your school, visit the HASTe Website or contact us at info@hastebc.org or 604.347.7704
