What is HASTE?

HASTE is a resource center for efforts to reduce school transportation emissions in British Columbia, Canada.

How is HASTE a hub?

Think of the hub of a bicycle wheel - it's the heart of the wheel, holds the whole thing together and has a bunch of spokes connecting it to the outside. We imagine HASTE as a networking center with all the resources necessary to start and support programs and projects designed to help students reduce their school transportation emissions.

What does HASTE have to offer?

Here you’ll find tools, resources and connections that will allow you to:

  • Gather information and ideas about sustainable transportation and active and safe routes to schools
  • Start a new project or support/improve an existing project
  • Calculate transportation emissions and make a plan to reduce them
  • Track your calculations and help with reporting
  • Find out about sustainable transportation organizations and programs
  • Get webinar training and downloadable training videos you can access and use 24/7
  • Access participation funding and information about other funding sources
  • Showcase and celebrate the actions and successes of students and their school community
  • Find out about other efforts and programs that are happening in your community and around the province through an interactive map-based display
  • Get information and feedback from experts and peers
  • Establish connections and build relationships through discussion forums

What resources are available?

On the HASTE website, you'll find a number of resources to support your emissions reduction program or help you get one started.

  • Guides to Action: If you have a great idea but are not sure how to get started, the Guides will help you figure out what you need to turn your idea into action. Here you'll find everything from advice and tips to a step-by-step buide to getting your program off the ground.
  • Emissions Calculator: The MyTravel tool will allow individuals and groups to figure out what kinds of impacts their to-and-from-school travel is currently having, and help them plan to reduce their emissions. The calculator offers a number of options and suggestions for changing travel behaviour. It also tracks and collects information, making results easy to find and reports easy to generate.
  • Discussion Forum: Through our online discussion forum, you can access a community of peers and experts. Here you can get advice or feedback on your plans, find out about emission reduction efforts in BC, connect with students, parents, teachers and delivery partners, organize an event or campaign, etc. The forum is an online community of folks working to reduce emissions at schools throughout the province.
  • Funding: HASTE can provide funding to schools interested in starting an emissions reduction program or accessing the hub's resources. We can also guide you to other funding opportunities that exist in BC.
  • Interactive Map and Showcase: HASTE is working to bring everyone in the province working to reduce school travel emissions together. We have an interactive map that can help you find other schools, programs and organizations working towards the same goals. And our showcase will provide information about and publicity for efforts being made to reduce emissions throughout BC.

Sound like a lot of stuff to sort through? Don't worry, we're going to be holding live webinars to introduce you to HASTE and all of the resoures we offer. We also have videos and tutorials you can download and access on your own time if you can't make one of our scheduled events.

Who is behind this hub?

HASTE is a collaborative project, initiated by the B.C. Ministries of Environment and Transportation, with support from the B.C. Ministries of Education and Health, the Climate Action Secretariat, and Environment Canada.

We welcome your input - HASTE is here to provide support for your programs and efforts, after all, and we want to make sure the tools we offer are working for you. You can give provide input by contacting us directly, leaving feedback in the discussion forum, or using this form to capture your big ideas or finer details so we can make the hub work even better.

Is it safe for students?

Yes. There are no advertisements, gimmicks or hidden agendas. All of the resources offered through HASTE have been carefully vetted and will be monitored to ensure that they're accessible and safe for students.

What will students like most about the hub?

  • The hub is a fun and dynamic site. You won't find a lot of essays and lessons here - the focus of HASTE is on action and engagement
  • The showcase celebrates the actions and accomplishments of students
  • HASTE provides connections to other students around the province with the same cares and concerns who are working to make the world a better place.
